In ancient times there was the epic hero, a man of great valour and strength. This epic hero was well portrayed in stories like Beowulf, and The Odyssey. This hero was often blessed with power, honour, loyalty and virtue.

He was always on a rescue mission to save a kingdom, and was often victorious. As a result from his triumph, he was greatly rewarded with many gifts. Some of the gifts would be: war-gear, horses, a sword, vast lands, and even a throne. This was back in history when this type of man existed. Now, in modern times, this type of man barely exists, or he may have evolved…

I could say that the epic hero evolved into another type of man. Perhaps he does not fight any battles or slay dragons, but he does something else that is just as great. This man is a football star. The modern hero everyone looks up to (that I look up to). If I have to pick one hero, that would be Leo Messi. His real name is Lionel but many call him Leo. This man boy, is filled with the same qualities of an epic hero. He is strong, loyal, honourable, and virtuous. So far I haven’t heard anything bad from him so I hope I am right when I write this.

Messi, plays in FC Barcelona football club, and he is from Argentina. He also represents his country in the World Cup 2010. Messi is currently on a mission: to win the Fifa World Cup! He must face many adversaries, defeat many countries (in the form of goals). In other words, he must score many goals in order to lead Argentina to victory. If Messi’s team wins, he and his teammates will be rewarded with the World Cup Trophy. In my opinion, Messi, is the best football player in the world, so he is my “epic hero”. I give that to him. I know he can lead Argentina to victory. I’ve seen him play for Barcelona so I know what he’s capable of. He possesses incredible speed and agility. All that power concentrated in one adorable boy. He is amazing!

Today, during his first match against Nigeria, Messi tried to score several goals. Unfortunately, none managed to get in because the goal keeper was very good. During the game, Messi was constantly attacked by his adversaries and I feared he would be injured. Luckily this demigod has amazing strength, so after each fall, he would always rise. Watching the football games is like an adventure, you never know what will happen next. The journey continues, and it will last for another four weeks. I only hope the hero will be victorious!
